Queen carnival crowning

This souvenir programme was recently found in our Archives. The ceremony was in the form of a concert held by the Kedron State School on Friday September 23rd, 1938. It was held at the Memorial Hall Kedron - that building no longer exists but it was the headquarters of the Kedron RSL.

The late Ray Barrett was the first name on the programme.

This certificate was issued to M. Bowden by the Geebung RSL in appreciation of his contributions to the war effort.

Do You Have any Information on a Moquet Gardens in Boondall area

The Society has received an enquiry for information, from Bob Tooth about a residence (?) known as "Mouquet Gardens" in the Boondall area, circa 1944. It is possible that the name "Mouquet" is a reference to Mouquet Farm, the scene of an important engagement by Australian troops on the Somme in 1916.

In 1944, "Mouquet Gardens" was apparently the residence of a Mrs Watkinson, who, as part of the war effort, corresponded with American servicemen and women (and their families) stationed in Brisbane on their way to the Pacific War. It is also possible that "Mouquet Gardens" provided hostel type accommodation for servicemen on leave from their camp; and there may have been a formal connection with the American 1st Cavalry Division based at Camp Strathpine.

Also Bob is trying to trace the movements of a young American soldier who was befriended by the Tooth family during the war, and who he knows from correspondence, was in touch with Mrs Watkinson at "Mouquet Gardens".

If you know anything related to this request then please send the Society an email or ring one of us and we will pass the information on to Bob who would appreciate any help you can give.
